The purpose of a child’s car seat is to keep the child protected while in the car, pretty much like a car seat belt does. It is designed to protect your little one from injury in case of a collision. The first thing we are taught when we go to driving school is to exercise caution and take all precautionary measures in case of an accident. Some of the precautionary measures are to fasten your seat belt before starting the car. A seat belt will not secure your child as they are too small and holding them is not safe enough. For this, you will need a child car seat.

There are several designs of car seats catering for children of ages and weights. For children under the age of 12 months or weight of 22 lbs, the best seats for them are rear-facing seats. These kinds of seats provide greater support for the child’s head, neck, and spine. As your child grows, you will need to get a front-facing car seat. Another option that you might consider is getting a convertible car seat. This is more convenient as you can use it both as a rear or front-facing seat depending on the age and size of your child. When your child has outgrown the car seat and is not big enough for the seat belt, you can consider getting a booster seat. Signs that your child has outgrown the baby seat will be if the top of their head is above the top part of the car seat.

Please note that although children seats can be fitted in the front seat of a car, it’s safer to fit them in the back either behind the driver’s or passenger seat. The reason for this is that if there is a collision while the child’s seat is fitted in the front seat and the airbag is deployed, it will cause serious injury to the child.
