How it works

The pulse oximeter most common application mode is by placing a sensory device on thin part on of one’s body, usually a fingertip or in the case of babies on the foot. The device used light to determine oxygen saturation. It contains a light source which passes wavelengths of light through the finger to an awaiting light detector. The device uses the light absorption rate to determine the oxygen saturation.

The basic concept of the pulse oximeter working relays on the fact that oxygen loaded haemoglobin absorbs light. This means the amount of light that is absorbed is proportional to the amount of oxygen loaded haemoglobin in the blood. The device uses a series of LED light with different wavelengths with on being red and the other infrared. Oxygenated haemoglobin absorbs more infrared light and allows more red light through. The device runs the two lights through the finger about thirty times per second to come up with an oxygen saturation level with the normal oxygen saturation level being above 95%.
