A waffle iron is a cooking utensil or electrical appliance that is used in preparations of waffles. It is made up of two metal plates that are hinged together and molded to form a pattern that resembles a honeycomb usually found on waffles. The waffle iron makers are of two types traditional and modern waffle makers. Traditional waffle irons are designed to bake two or four little square size waffles while the modern waffle makers are designed to cook six oversize waffles. The shapes produced by the modern waffle irons is usually round and resembles the Belgian waffles. In selecting a waffle, you can either consider the number of people it serves or the shape it produces, but this depends on your preferences.

Waffle iron is usually unique, and it is only designed for baking and making waffles. One cannot use this kitchen appliance for any other purpose. However, the only thing you can do is prepare waffles that have varying tastes. You can do this either by adding spices or baking using different recipes. The spices that are commonly added are cinnamon and nutmeg.

Most of the Waffle irons function in press-the-lid-down design. Though you might find some waffle makers that operate in normal non-flip style or have a flip-style design. The flip-style waffle irons are more preferred than the regular ones, as they allow the batter to flow freely into the entire area of the waffle mold, thus producing a better waffle.

The waffle iron uses electricity to heat a resist heating component. The heat generated is then transferred to the cast iron plates that prepares waffle batter. The temperature is regulated by a built- in thermostat which enables the waffle iron to produce good crisp waffles. The waffle maker has a regulator that permits the user to select longer or shorter cooking period to vary the done of the end product.
